St. Marys Park Community Group Visits Áras an Uachtaráin

Monday, August 15th, 2011

St. Marys Park Community Group were fortunate to be invited to visit Áras an Uachtaráin this summer. (July)

A group of eight people were selected from the committee to travel, as there was a limit of eight people - which left some members of the committee disappointed.

However, we were delighted to have the use of our community bus, which was driven by Martin O’ Connor of St. Marys A.I.D which was greatly appreciated.

Every member of the group got to meet the President individually, this was followed by some light refreshments and some music.

Overall everyone had a great day, the visit to Áras an Uachtaráin  was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Finally we would like to thank Christy Mc Inerney who organised this event.

Jerry Flannery puts his weight behind Literacy Project, with a little help from Felix Jones

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Munster and Ireland hooker Jerry Flannery today launched the READ 2011 Literacy Project for Southill Local Committee. This innovative community based initiative involves children and their families attending all the schools in the Southill community and also targets local residents and agency workers. The project aims to record the reading of at least 2011 books in the community during a ten week period. “We are confident of exceeding our 2011 target as there is a very strong culture of reading in all five schools involved and we have received great encouragement from local agencies“ said Mary Blenerhasett, Chariperson. Deputy Mayor Fahy attended teh launch in St. Enda’s Community School, pledging his suppor for the project and encouraging the committee to continue with their endeavours to promote reading. “Books can open up a new world of imagination and with libraries situted locally, reading cen be an inexpensive hobby bringing so much pleasure to people particularly nowadays when so many have spare time to fill.“

This endeavour follows on the hugely sucessful One Book One Southill project which the committee ran in 2009.
